About Lumea

We started by throwing most of it away.

Lumea began in 2019 with a bathroom shelf that held twenty-three products and a face that had never been worse. The problem was not any single formula. It was that nothing had been given long enough to work, and half of it was fighting the other half.

The short version

Ten products, because that is how many are needed

Iris Alvander had spent eleven years formulating for other people, mostly for brands whose briefs began with a launch date and a hero ingredient chosen by a marketing team. The formulas that worked best were rarely the ones that sold best, and the difference was almost never the chemistry.

Lumea is the version of that job with the brief rewritten. Ten products, each one there because a specific problem needed solving and no existing product in the range solved it. No seasonal launches, no limited editions, no eleventh product added because the range looked thin next to a competitor.

Everything is made in a small facility in Portland, in batches of a few thousand units, and stability tested for twelve weeks before release. That is slower and more expensive than outsourcing to a contract manufacturer with a catalogue of stock formulas. It is also the only way to know exactly what is in the bottle and to change it when the evidence changes.

Six people work here. Three of them answer the emails, which is why the routine advice you get back is specific rather than a copied paragraph, and why we will occasionally tell you not to buy something.

How we formulate

Four rules, and nothing gets a pass

  1. 01

    One active per bottle

Combination formulas look efficient and behave unpredictably. When four actives share a bottle you cannot tell which one is working and which one is causing the stinging. Ours are separated so you can add them one at a time and know what did what.

  2. 02

    The concentration in the studies

Where the research supports 5%, we use 5%. Where a higher number would only raise irritation without raising results, we do not use it. The percentage on the front of the bottle is a marketing decision at most brands. Here it is a formulation one.

  3. 03

    Published in full

Every ingredient list appears on the product page, in order, not just the flattering three. If an ingredient is present at a level too low to do anything, it is not in the formula at all.

  4. 04

    Honest timelines

Hydration is same day. Oil takes a fortnight. Pigmentation takes three months. We put those numbers on the page because a customer who knows the timeline judges the product fairly, and a customer who does not gives up in week two.

What we will not do

No urgency, no before-and-afters, no miracle claims

You will not find a countdown timer on this site, or a photograph of someone else's skin presented as a promise about yours. Lighting explains most before-and-after pairs, and the ones it does not explain usually involve a treatment that is not in the bottle.

What we will do is tell you the timeline, publish the full ingredient list, and take the product back within thirty days if it turns out to be wrong for your skin. Opened, used, half empty, it does not matter. Return postage inside the United States is on us.
